One of the very few human beings I genuinely love and feel speaks directly to me. To quote Pauline Kael about Dreyer: "Everything that son-of-a-bitch did was great.”
If you haven't seen it yet... I recommend you an extraordinary documentary: "Un poeta nel cinema" by Donatella Baglivo!
"[H]e rejected Eisensteinian montage and developed a demanding long-take aesthetic, which he thought better able to reveal the deeper truths underlying the ephemeral, performing moment."
I can't express enough how I'm really deeply affected by his fondness of the human face and the natural beauty of surroundings that transcends through his consciousness of time and space. The bleak desolated image he captures combined with the careful observation of moments remind me of Bazin's notion of 'ambiguity of reality' by the minimal montage intervention, flourishing the capability of cinema to be a distinct form of art in its ability to capture time. The strange thing is, for some reason, he feels like a figure of fatherhood in my personal relationship to cinema.
Dostoevsky and Tarkovsky make me feel so wonderful and sad at the same time. Lurve them.
Tarkovsky has created some of the most incredible, beautiful moments in cinema with his magnificent, poetic eye for the art in landscapes and natural settings. Works such as "Andrei Rublev," "Ivan's Childhood," and my personal favorite, "Stalker," are true masterpieces of high art and beauty. Tarkovsky may be my favorite film director of all time; his art and vision make his work superior and unforgettable.
New biography of Tarkovsky is out. (In Russian) Here's the author's website w/links to retailers. http://www.viktorfilimonov.com/
I'm watching his stuff in order. It's been three months and I still haven't moved on from Andrei Rublev. I'm still fully processing it. I have never thought about a film more.
just saw: "there will be no leave today" incredible well done, a masterpiece of: !action cinema!
