Julian Atanassov was born in 1976 in Kyustendil, Bulgaria, where he attended the city’s renowned fine art high school. He entered the Sofia Film and Television Academy in 1996. In 1999, he undertook further studies in Berlin at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie (DFFB). He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Cinematography in 2006. He was the Director of Photography on Kamen Kalev’s films “Eastern Plays” (2008) and “The Island” (2010), both of which were shown at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. With “The Island”, Atanassov won the Golden Rose Bulgarian Film Award for Best Cinematography. He currently lives and works in Berlin and Sofia.
