He claims to derive influence from the latter two, yet denies any inspiration from Ozu - but you're right, the resemblence is there and it is rather stunning.
he's like some mind blowingly brilliant combination of Ozu, Fukasaku and Peckinpah.

I can understand his unwillingness to deny any sort of influence from Ozu; considering the bit in Glory to the Filmmaker! where he says something like "Who wants to watch people sit around drinking sake for 30 minutes?" I don't know...maybe those beautiful still moments are more generally Japanese than simply Ozu-esque?

Well, I started with "Kids Return." Not a bad place to start, but maybe you should go from the beginning with "Violent Cop."
However Seth, I think that quote can easily be extended to film as a whole and it makes it a pretty good quote. However, I also really like this one as it shows his film making style more. "When I write a script, I have the entire film in my head, so when we start shooting, I just do it. Im more interested in the editing process, so I tend to shoot in a hurry. Maybe you don`t always have enough footage, but how you play around with it, is what is interesting."
Gonin is a good one. I'll never forget his eye patch and green transparent umbrella, shooting the cops in the rain. :)
One of the single most remarkable human beings alive today. Just knowing I'm on the same planet as this man fills me with a ridiculous amount of joy.
Kitano goes by the beat of his own drum. His films don't follow any recognizable style of Japanese cinema. He has a quirky sense of humor, pacing and empathy that is uniquely his own, and I hope that it will forever stay that way. Achilles and the Tortoise is one of my favorites to date.
