I think you miss the point. Miyazaki is a postmodern romantic, idolizing nature and warmth. He's not simply being a misanthrope, yearning for apocalypse... I think he honestly feels like humankind would be better off living in a green world, even if our cities had to be washed away. He's just a dreamer. (Reposting this, as I had posted it before comments-to-comments were available.)

When most director use their brain to create their movie, Miyazaki-sama use his whole heart! Thank you for filling this world with magic, heart, and optimism.

I love his quote. I also love that in films he's not afraid to take that stance either. I also love that Studio Ghibli champions more obscure animators in their museum, giving them more exposure. Probably my favorite recent director, because he's such a good person as well. :)
