he and gray were making films together way before fassbender did with mcqueen.
The deepest view on contemporary American cinema that you will read today, by one of its prominent figures: James Gray http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/james-gray-on-marion-cotillard-joaquin-phoenix-and-the-central-crisis-of-american-cinema-20121212
James Gray is so underrated! One of the best contemporary filmmakers. Master of laconic, nervy, strong, perfect cinema
I am fascinated by Gray and how he has made 3 films (excluding Odessa which I don't recall well enough) about the same idea or question: that is, if I do what I am supposed to do socially I will lose personally and yet how can I not do what I am supposed to do, etc. Very good storyteller, very good writer. Can he keep at it in America, 21st century? I hope so.
One of the best American directors working, right up there with Mann, Lynch, Ferrara, P.T. Anderson, Fincher, and Reichardt. I have great hopes for him.
