Pia Frankenberg is a filmmaker and author. She has produced numerous short films and films since 1979 and has written four books. Her latest book “Nora” was published in 2006. She currently works on a new book with narratives. Pia Frankenberg lives in New York City.

Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1957. Early childhood spent in Rhöndorf by the Rhine.
1964 – 67 Primary School in Rhöndorf.
1967 – 71 Catholic Girls High School Liebfraueninsel Nonnenwerth Bad Honnef, Rhein.
1971 – 76 Continued high school education at Schule Schloß Salem, Salem/Bodensee.
1976 Abitur – graduation.
Relocation to Hamburg, trained as an actress at the Hochschule für Musik and Darstellende Kunst in Hamburg for two semesters.
Member of various independent theatre groups.
Attended workshop at the Theatre of the Oppressed organized by the Brazilian Augusto Boal (within the context of the Theatre of Nations in Hamburg, 1979). read more

1980 Travels to the Peruvian Amazon, several visits to the set of Fitzcarraldo, directed by Werner Herzog. Travels to Brazil and New York.
1981 Freak Orlando, directed by Ulrike Ottinger. Co-producer and continuity.

1982 Penthesilea, directed by Hans Neuenfels. Continuity and assistant director.

1988 A stay of several weeks in Brazil as part of a lecture tour by German filmmakers organized by the Goethe Institute.
1992 Conversion of the Pia Frankenberg Music and Film Production into NEXT FILM.
The company develops screenplay-projects (e.g. The Trio by Hermine Huntgeburt) and documentaries.
1994 Laurens Straub joins NEXT FILM as a co-partner. Amongst other things, the
company produces the theme nights Christo and Dogs like us (in co-operation with Thomas Struck) for ARTE as well as the feature films Fisimatenten, directed by Jochen Kuhn, and The Trio, directed by Hermine Huntgeburt.
1993 – 98 Shareholder in the award-winning Alabama-cinema on Kampnagel, Hamburg, together with partners Doris Bandhold and Michael Conrad.
1994/95 Work on a novel depicting a childhood spent in the Rhine region during the Sixties.
1995 Relocation to New York where the novel Die Kellner und ich is completed.
1996 Die Kellner und ich is published.
1999 Sale of shares in NEXT FILM to Laurens Straub. Retired from film work.
2001 Klara und die Liebe zum Zoo is published.
2002 Work on a collection of stories.
