Miloš Forman

Biography

Forman grew up in a small town near Prague. Orphaned when his parents, a Jewish professor and a Protestant housewife, died in Nazi concentration camps, he was reared by two uncles and family friends. In the mid-1950s Forman studied at the film school of the University of Prague. Upon graduating he wrote two screenplays, the first of which, Nechte to na mn (“Leave It to Me”), was filmed in 1955 by noted Czech director Martin Fri. The way I feel about Milos Forman is the same way I feel about Peter Weir. They both made original and wonderful films in the beginning of their careers, but when they started working in Hollywood, all the originality and freshness of those early films, vanished, just like that. Granted, I like "Cuckoos nest" and "Taking off". -But all the films he made after those two, are devoid of all the charm and beauty that made Loves of a Blonde, The fireman's Ball, Black Peter and Konkurs, so special.
