Jim Henson — creator of The Muppets and undoubtedly the most beloved puppeteer in history — was born in the town of Leland, Mississippi, on September 24, 1936, the son of an agronomist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Henson family moved to Hyattsville, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., in the late 1940s, and in 1955 Jim, already a skilled puppeteer, began his studies in Theatre Arts at the University of Maryland.

Any Henson fans that haven't watched 'The Storyteller' with John Hurt should do so, immediately! Watched it recently and it's as brilliant; scary; funny as I remembered. 'The Soldier and Death' is my favorite.

All of Henson's films are wonderful, but I think that people seem to forget the short films he made that didn't involve the Muppets. "Time Piece," for example, is one of the best movies he made and it is rarely ever talked about by film scholars.
