Elliott's Suicide (2007, 15 min., DVD), an excerpt: http://vimeo.com/17848499
Honestly the main reason it took me so long to become a fan of him is because most of his films scared me. But having re-watched many of his films repeatedly there's no denying his view of cinema as magic is one of the most unique perspectives in film. As Scorsese put it in regards to 'Scorpio Rising' his films function like a sort of evocation of something per-existing and oddly the more his style is imitated (With imitators ranging from Scorsese himself to Lady Gaga) the more inherently modern his approach feels. While "Hollywood Babylon" is mostly nonsense I believe its key in understanding his perspective, where the appeal of Hollywood is the juxtaposition of the cities glamorous surface and its morbid underbelly. Anger's films embrace both extremes simultaneously.
saw Anger give a great performance with Brian Butler's band, as they created the score for Butler's Film. truly remarkable. he plays the theremin so so well. :)
It was such a pleasure to see Anger messing with the haute couture world, and doing such a great job... I'm talking about his last work for Missoni. A dream more than a film, transforming the Missoni family into a host of pagan priests, in a less than 3 minutes visual poetry of gestures and colors where the reminiscences of Parajanov's "The Color Of Pomegranades" (my favorite director, my favorite movie) are evident and wonderful.
I had the pleasure of seeing a lot of Anger's films at Ann Arbor's Film Festival earlier this year, followed by a Q + A session with the man himself. He came out wearing a red sweater that said "ANGER" on it in big black letters, and walked across the stage multiple times with his arms in the air for appox. 3 minutes before sitting down and completely dodging all questions, except the ones about his Satanic devotions. He also showed us his tattoos (except the one on his butt) and told us about his upcoming project that will be called "PARANOID", featuring music by the Jonas Brothers. He is super cute!
Found this Hollywood Babylon program with Anger, in 6 parts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu22nFREilU&feature=related
It looks like there are two pages for Kenneth Anger, this one and another one with no info and FIREWORKS listed. That's somethin' that needs fixin'.
Fireworks is listed on The Auteurs, but it doesn't show up on this page for some reason. Weird.
