John Gilbert is a film editor who works primarily in New Zealand. He was nominated for three major awards for the editing of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001): an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award for Best Editing, and an ACE Eddie Award. Gilbert won the Satellite Award for Best Editing for the film.

Gilbert never returned to his studies (history and anthropology), but moved on to Television New Zealand, where he worked as an assistant editor and editor.
