Nicolas Cage isn't an actor, he is a tool. When used correctly he can be great but his lack of range and his need to support his extravagant lifestyle with any movie that comes along holds him back.
“I cry a lot. My emotions are very close to my surface. I don't want to hold anything in so it festers and turns into pus - a pustule of emotion that explodes into a festering cesspool of depression.”
It's fascinating how Cage teeters between artistry and kitsch and yet he plays it like he just doesn't care either way. His listless drawl seems like the wrong choice for a narrative, yet his voiceovers -- from "Raising Arizona" to "Bringing Out the Dead" to "Lord of War" -- are among my favorites.
For some reason, I feel that Cage is the definitive 21st century American film actor.
It seems like ever since the crappy World Trade Center film, Cage has started to look more and more like a computer generated image, to an almost parodic extent. In WTC, it looked like his face was superimposed over that of a firefighter in actual 9/11 footage. In Windwalkers, his face appeared to be superimposed over a soldier in actual Vietnam footage. Unfortunately, his face throws off any believability that the film might have had. And I dont care what anyone says, his "Bad Lieutenant" redux was garbage, along with the infamous "Wicker Man" regurgitation. Cage is currently in his Fat Elvis period, he jumped the shark years ago, for me it was about the time that he got a toothjob and became the boring nasally nebbish of "Leaving Las Vegas". Final undeniable evidence that he sucks in three words: Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Go away for a while, Nic.
If Frosty the Snowman was made out of cocaine instead of plain old snow, it would be this guy
I don't give a shit about what certain people may say, Nicolas Cage is a fucking great actor.
Great actor. Wish he didn't cop so much flack for the crappy films he's done because mixed in he's done some great stuff! So much fun!
its a testament to his skill as an actor that his few good films make up for the piles of refuse he associates with
Nic is a terrific actor suffering the same problems as robin williams, robert deniro have who are also terrific actors by being greedy and picking up whatever movie comes along instead of making sound career choices. If Cage's movies fail its not because of cages acting, its because of direction/writing etc.
He's great in everything. Not to sound like an asshole, but I think I "get" Nic Cage more than anyone else.
