Words cannot describe how much I love Jonathan Demme. One of the most underrated and unique storytellers of American cinema. His brilliance may not smack you in the face initially but once you look at the details in his movies it becomes hard not to fall in love with him. His visual style, use of colour and music is just so offbeat and quirky in a truly heartwarming way. One of the very best out there.

almost everything he did up until (and including) TSotL was a masterstroke, the work of genius. he was so in tune with the american working class rhythms, his satire was fresh and mocking, he presented a very intelligent take on feminism, and he possessed a totally innate, and charming, pop art sensibility. i'd love to see the director's cut of swing shift.
