well-put, my friend.
DePalma is proof that my teachers were wrong when they told me not to plagiarize. Like TS Eliot said, "Immature poets imitate; Mature poets steal."
De Palma definitely vulgarizes his material, but I've never felt that he's asking me to take it seriously. His films are more tongue in cheek. He's saying there's nothing wrong with a film being a grand spectacle in style.
Impressionist directors create a richly detailed screen world, where you can lose yourself and follow an interesting story. Brian De Palma is an expressionist artist who etches the images behind your retina and plays piano with your nerves. This is why his films might appear unrealistic and illogical. He foregoes conventional realism and via grotesque expression ignites the consciousness of the audience.
"The critical establishment is really in a decline since, I guess, Sarris and Pauline Kael stopped leading this group. They don't write too interestingly about movies. Some of the most interesting criticism you'll read on the web from some film freak that just really loves movies and gives you incredibly good insights to what you're watching." Few of them are found on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes Brian. ;D
I've always had a love-hate relationship with DePalma. Body Double is incredible and horrific at the same time - daringly original and yet it stumbles back and forth across the line between homage to Hitchcock and rick-off of Rear Window. But Carrie and Phantom of the Paradise are masterpieces, hands-down. www.foec.wordpress.com
I,ve seen 6 movies for this man , overall he is a good director , some of his movies are really great and others are intermediate or overrated , however from the movies I saw he doesn't usually make weak movies ........ however he has no one masterpiece , yes he have no masterpieces but he have some really good movies...........overall Brian De Palme rarelly makes a weak or failure movies and also rarelly makes a real masterpiece.
Just me, or does it seem de Palma only works from heavy inspiration from other great films (Scarface, Blowup, Rear Window etc). I've always found his films to be quite boring (Black Dahlia sitting right at the top), while his overall contributions to cinema have been more like a fan - rather than true visionary
probaly along with Tony Scott and Scorsese my fave director. Yes i know its de riguer to hate his films but i cant help liking them
Atm my favoritt DePalma films are: Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Body Double, Sisters and Femme Fatal. Damn De Palma is an underestimated film maker! It`s a shame
He's only made one great film- and it BLOWs his other films OUT of the water.
Carlito´s Way es magnífica. Está en mi mi top ten de filmes favoritos. Bochornoso que no se encuentre entre las opciones a elegir.
