Werckmeister or Damnation.
Where do I start? I own Satantango, The Man From London, Damnation, Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse
He's an absolutely fantastic director and a genius, but man based on his movies I would never invite him to a dinner party.
Of all of the masterful auteurs of cinema, past and present, there isn't a director I will miss more than Tarr. His final five films have been on a whole different level, and there will be a big hole in cinema now he has retired. Maybe Lav Diaz is our only 'hope' for this kind of cinema.
Magic, hypnotic, time flows slowly and people, and their histories, are only dreams within a dream.
The Prefab People gave me a delightful sense of emptiness. Glad to see films that "show it like it is."
“The people of this generation know information-cut, information-cut, information-cut. They can follow the logic of it, the logic of the story, but they don't follow the logic of life.”
I am amazed to see that Family Nest, The Outsider, and Prefab Peoe are not on this page. Those are the first three of Bela Tarrs films that I've watched. I'm indifferent to Family Nest but the other two are incredible. The last film of his I watched was Werckmeister Harmonies which still blows me away
Finally bought a Region-Free DVD player, and imported Sátántangó. So in a week or so I can finally experience what may be the best cinematic experience in my young cinephile life!
"Prologue" should be on here, as well as "Journey on the Plain". Prologue is just another example of the beautiful combination of Tarr's vision with Vig Mihály's amazing score.
Bela Tarr's films are where it's at . . . “I think censorship is always there. Then it was the censorship of the state and now it's the censorship of the market.” BT
