Howard Hawks

Director

“I'm a storyteller - that's the chief function of a director. And they're moving pictures, let's make 'em move! ”

Biography

Although John Ford—his friend, contemporary, and the director arguably closest to him in terms of his talent and output—told him that it was he, and not Ford, who should have won the 1941 Best Director Academy Award (for Sergeant York (1941)), the great Hawks never won an Oscar in competition and was nominated for Best Director only that one time, despite making some of the best films in the Hollywood canon. The consummate Hollywood director, who would have probably laughed at the French critics labeling him an "auteur". Less a stylist than a craftsman, nevertheless, he made some great films: "Bringing Up Baby" and "Ball of Fire" are the ultimate screwball comedies, "The Big Sleep" is the definition of film noir, "Only Angels Have Wings" is a wonderful adventure-romance, "Red River" is among the best westerns ever made, and "The Thing from Another World" is a perfect example of the 1950s sci-fi monster movie.
