Land of the Pharaohs is his best!
Whenever I think of Hawks, I think of the word "warmth": warmth of character, warmth of feeling, respect for the smallest character in any of his films. And crucially, a conveying of film as an ensemble endeavour. For this reason I always associate Hawks with Renoir.
The consummate Hollywood director, who would have probably laughed at the French critics labeling him an "auteur". Less a stylist than a craftsman, nevertheless, he made some great films: "Bringing Up Baby" and "Ball of Fire" are the ultimate screwball comedies, "The Big Sleep" is the definition of film noir, "Only Angels Have Wings" is a wonderful adventure-romance, "Red River" is among the best westerns ever made, and "The Thing from Another World" is a perfect example of the 1950s sci-fi monster movie.
Just watched Barbary Coast. Not his best but a great movie nonetheless! Love Joel McCrea, Miriam Hopkins, and Edward G. Robinson in it. It's funny how early talkies were more risque before the production code was adopted than the movies that followed for the next thirty to forty years before it was dropped.
Wow, only ONE wall post? Is this what one of the great American filmmakers deserves?
