Born in Chicago on May 16, 1943, of a military family, Jon Jost grew up in Georgia, Kansas, Japan, Italy, Germany and Virginia. Expelled from college in 1962, he began making 16mm films in January, 1963. He is self-taught. He has made some 20+ shorts and 14 feature length films on celluloid, 16 and 35mm, all of which he has conceived, written, photographed, directed and edited; most of these he also produced. Since 1996 he has worked only in Digital Video (DV), completing 18 full-length works and many shorts, as well as one large-scale 7 screen installation work, TRINITY, presented at the ZKM, Karlsruhe Germany, in this medium as of 2009.
After 10 years of making short works, Jost made his first feature-length film in 1974, and since devoted himself to the making of a wide-ranging series of films, largely focused on specifically American topics, in forms ranging from essays (Speaking Directly, Stagefright, Plain Talk & Common Sense), to fictions (Last Chants for a Slow Dance;… read more
I you haven't seen, see these, regarding one of MUBI's topics of note: http://cinemaelectronica.wordpress.com/2012/09/10/chained-relations/ http://cinemaelectronica.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/chained-relations-2/ If interested in current filmmaking of my own, see: www.jonjostcomingtoterms.wordpress.com
Back in the USA, trip per below done. Now in Newport Oregon and shortly headed to Anaconda MT, where I'll be shooting new film. Will be doing new narrative there with a cast of actors I've worked with before - Kate Sannella, Steve Taylor, Ryan Harper Gray, Roxanne Rogers and perhaps a few others. And filmmaker James Benning will be playing a major role for me, as well as doing some shots. We're going to try to fund it on Kickstarter. So those who look at my work here - for which I am paid ZERO - how about kicking in as it were when we send it out. I will note it here when we get it up. We will need the help. Otherwise it'll come out of my pockets, eating up my little bit of savings. I have no health, life or other insurance, aside from the mandatory car minimum. 69 and living like a bum, sleeping in the back of my 91 Subaru. What a life! So help out if you will. A little request - that bio needs some updating, and per an earlier request I'd like to see ModFuck and The Living End deleted on this page - explanation in earlier posting. So whomever does this, can you write me or can someone let me know how to contact the person who might do this. I'd do it myself if I could find how. Second: I'll be in USA for first time in 4 years come this spring; LA (Film Forum March 18, somewhere else with Chameleon), the San Francisco, probably showing at Cinematheque, no date but around 24th; Portland OR something near end of month; UTenn Knoxville March 30-April 1, workshop, screening, talk; maybe Nashville right after (Vanderbilt); Chicago to April 10; Kansas City FF April 11-15, workshop/screening and whatever they ask; Lincoln NE, Ross Cinema, date unset. Perhaps St Cloud MN and Mnpls. NYC first week of May or so. And then in August I hope to shoot a film either in Anaconda MT or Neah Bay, WA (most western point on mainland USA) - this will be a fiction, more or less in the vein of The Bed You Sleep In. Jim Benning has agreed to play a role and do some shots for it. It will only be done if I can raise 25K via Kickstarter or some way. I can't afford to dip into my modest savings to pay for it myself. Any help much appreciated. And then, if an arrangement to live in Tokyo and do a film there falls through, I'd spend the next 12 months traveling USA to shoot finale to Speaking Directly/Plain Talk and Common Sense essay sequence on the state of the nation. Need to raise 50K. And lots of help along the way - like places to stay, people to meet, advice on local things, contacts to interesting people/sources. Tentative title: Democracy in America (?). Again, any help/advice welcome. So maybe those of you who have seen films here (for which I get $0), maybe you can help out? Thanks jon firstname.lastname@example.org
