He is indeed.
Someone once described his films as "Tim Burton for eggheads" which seems apt. By all accounts, he is very friendly and down-to-earth in person, so that's good.
My favorite filmmaker... it's a strange how utterly beautiful his movies are!
I met him at the American premiere of "Keyhole" at the Wexner Center for the Arts, and he was an extremely friendly, extremely intelligent personality. Not only is Maddin one of the best filmmakers working today, and definitely one of my heroes, but he is also a wonderful human being.
The Heart of the World is an excellent place to start, as it's one of his best and only 6 minutes long. Brand Upon The Brain! was the first feature I saw of his, and I've been a huge Maddin devotee ever since.
If you ask me, for such an original filmmaker, being called the "David Lynch of Canada" is an insult.
