Biography

Alexander Arturovich Rou (Russian spelling, English spelling may be “Rowe”) (Russian: Александр Артурович Роу, 24 February [O.S. 11 February] 1906 – 28 December 1973) was a Soviet film director, People’s Artist of RSFSR (1968). He worked primarily in fairy-tale genre.

He was born to Irish father (Arthur Rowe) and Russian mother, hence the unusual family name. Since 1930 worked at Mezhrabpomfilm as an assistant director to Yakov Protazanov on the films Marionettes (1934) and Without Dowry (1937) as well as with other directors.

Since 1937 worked at the studio “Soyuzdetfilm”, later known as Gorky Film Studio —Wikipedia
