I don't get why everyone's arguments about why he isn't a great director are derivative of him being "smug" and "selfish". I don't get that from his movies at all. You do have to admit that he directs very interesting stories, and his movies are very auteur driven, which MUBI users seem to love.
He's a fascinating director. I don't think that he wants to teach something to the audience. He wants us to question our perception of the films, he wants us to question our perception of good and evil and that's why, he's probably one of the only directors working now that is making films which help us, as citizens, to question our society and improve ourselves.
Funny Games is the carton of cigarettes, you (the audience) are the child that was caught smoking and Michael Haneke is your dad...... The Piano Teacher is just in case you didn't learn your lesson the first time....
Oh, Michael Haneke. People say you're such a challenging director. But I don't believe it.

Too bad there isn't an "Unlike" option. Haneke is overrated and intellectually lame.
“A feature film is twenty-four lies per second.” Godard ref. Also, Haneke is probably the most interesting director working today.
He simplifies themes such as Madness(The Piano Teacher) and Terrorism(The White Ribbon) to it's RAW form that is right in front of your face. He confront's the viewer automatically, sometimes literally(Funny Games), and never lets up. A voice in cinema I am now fixed upon.
The finest director in recent years to create real films. Near-perfect cinema.
Does anyone else see a distinct formalism in Hanake that evokes the spirit of Robert Bresson? Not only in style but in emotional impact.
Haneke in a recent Film Comment interview: "Since puberty, I've always defined myself by taking a certain distance. I see it even in everyday conversations. That's also why I'm not good at accepting accolades. How should I say...As soon as a majority takes shape, I'm against it on principle. It's instinctive. Whenever people agree on everything, I get aggressive."
