Born on December 22, 1935 in Oporto, Portugal.
Paulo abandoned Lisbon Law School to dedicate himself to the movies, and founded Cine-Clube de Lisboa (CCC) with Nuno de Bragança, Duarte de Almeida, Pedro Tamen and Alberto Vaz da Silva. In 1962, concluded his studies at IDHEC, Paris, France, but he says he learned more watching time and again Jean Renoir and Kenzo Mizoguchi films than in academic film studies.
Among his best known films are A Ilha dos Amores and O Rio do Ouro. A Ilha dos Amores was entered into the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and O Rio do Ouro was screened in the “Un Certain Regard” section at the 1998 Festival.
