Florida almost 2 years ago

Being from Florida myself, I’ll have to tell you that it is rare. There are so few movies that capture Florida well, in the way that I know it. It’s all beaches and fast cars, which yes, there are plenty, but there is also a lot of poorer areas with violence and crime. One that does a surprisingly great job photographing South Florida is Miami Vice. Also, thought it’s not a great movie, Ace Ventura captures South Florida pretty well too.

I’ve been dying to see Wind Across The Everglades by Nicholas Ray as that’s basically my backyard.

If you’re looking for films of the grindhouse variety, look up the director William Grefe. He did a bunch of films in South Florida. He worked with actors like William Shatner and Rita Hayworth.

Divorce, Italian Style – Petro Germi

One of my favorites, for sure.

Tucker (1988): Does the Quality of an Idea Matter Anymore? almost 2 years ago

I’m not sure I can add much to this thread other than the fact that I had a lot of the same questions after watching The Social Network. That movie was all about the execution of an idea as opposed to the actual idea itself. The ones that came up with the idea would have never been able to execute it the way Zuckerberg did but he also may have never come up with said idea had he not taken it from the ones that came up with it.

I don’t think he’s in Midnight in Paris but he has been on the television show Boardwalk Empire, which is excellent.

Where to rent films?! almost 2 years ago

The thing that is frustrating with Netflix is that both the streaming and DVD/Blu-Ray sides of the site are lacking IMO. You kind of have to have both to get a fuller experience. There just isn’t a good streaming selection in terms of movies and they’re really slacking on stocking new DVD releases unless they’re major releases from big studios, it would seem. For instance, The Great Dictator has been out almost two months on Criterion and Netflix STILL isn’t carrying it. It took them at least two-three months to start carrying Senso as well. People On Sunday also came out a few weeks ago and they not only aren’t carrying it, but it doesn’t even exist in their database.

I looked into Hulu Plus and the only thing they have going for them is the Criterion deal but even then I like watching movies outside of their collection.

@ Captain: The disc I got in the mail was the Criterion version but the streaming version is not and is of a much lesser quality. I kept a close eye on the title as I was interested in seeing the film and it seems that they didn’t start carrying the Criterion disc until they got the rights to stream a different transfer entirely. If you ask me, it seems that relationship ended in a nasty way and Netflix is doing what they can to not give revenue to Criterion. In the end, it only makes me and I’m sure others, upset with Netflix.

Shia LeBeouf and Redford: The Game Changer almost 2 years ago

I think The Wettest County in the World will be his first real challenge into becoming the actor he says he wants to be. It has an interesting sounding story that was written by Nick Cave and is being directed by John Hillcoat. He heads up a cast including Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman, Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain and Jason Clarke. I feel like he’s the weakest link in that lineup of talent but hopefully he’ll prove me wrong.

Judging by his awful Details profile recently(where he came off as a huge asshole), the guy seems to have a lot of raw emotion(anger, pain) underneath his tough guy facade that he tries to exude in the interview. Maybe if he can tap into those emotions, he can be a great actor.

Caught (streaming on Netflix) almost 2 years ago

I saw it on Instant several months ago and enjoyed it. Kind of hard not to enjoy an Ophuls, even if it’s minor Ophuls. The whole cast is great in this and Robert Ryan is excellent as a Howard Hughes stand-in.

Nicholas Ray suggestions. almost 2 years ago

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed In a Lonely Place, They Live By Night, Rebel Without a Cause, Bigger Than Life and Johnny Guitar. Saw all but Rebel and Bigger Than Life on the big screen. Does anyone know how to find Wind Across The Everglades without using torrents? This movie fascinates me as I grew up near the Everglades and am of course a fan of Ray.

Is Vertigo the greatest film of all time? 10 months ago

I’ll throw myself into the camp of those who did not get Vertigo’s appeal or greatness upon first viewing it. But it sort of stuck into my unconscious for a few years following, until the time came where I couldn’t stop myself from being curious enough to see it again. I finally ended up re-watching it and it’s a film that blooms tremendously with each viewing and has become one of my favorites and would certainly be in my top 10, which I could say about maybe 3-4 films. It’s an endlessly fascinating movie in which I always notice something new upon each subsequent viewing.

Wait, how does Shirley Maclaine’s character not being a good speller have anything to do with The Apartment being condescending to females?

Tag Gallagher - Our Greatest Film Critic 9 months ago

Fascinating essay to a great film. Ophuls is particularly one of my favorites and this one is probably my second favorite behind Madame De…

Interestingly enough(or not), I first encountered Gallagher’s work just this past week as I’m eating up Josef Von Sternberg’s oeuvre and read an illuminating article he wrote on his films. That along with this video essay will certainly have me look into more of his work, especially since he seems to write about some of my favorite filmmakers.

Thanks Jerry, for the post.

Speaking of Letter From An Unknown Woman, look at what I stumbled upon:

http://www.amazon.com/Letter-From-Unknown-Woman-Blu-ray/dp/B008NNSDBY/ref=wl_mb_hu_m_10_dp

It’s being put out by an Olive Films which seems to be an up and coming Blu-Ray/DVD distributor.

Top 10 Romances 9 months ago

Most of the ones I’ve seen listed are probably what I’d list, but I want to add one huge one that I just saw recently thanks to Criterion putting it out and that’s Lonesome by Pál Fejös from 1928. A charming, visually dazzling and romantic masterpiece of late silent/early talkie cinema.

Your Oscar Choices Through End Of September 8 months ago

From what I understand, Jonny Greenwood put together the score for The Master in the same way he did for There Will Be Blood, thus leaving him ineligible. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s the case.

Mubi Hall of Fame: John Huston 7 months ago

1. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
2. The Maltese Falcon
3. The Man Who Would Be King

I’ve seen several others of his that are serviceable but not good enough for me to add points to since they’re obviously in competition with the above three. I also don’t think I’ll be able to watch any more of his films in the next week to fit it in before the vote ends, so I figure I’ll throw in my post now.

Where did everyone see Wind Across The Everglades? DVD? VHS? I’ve been wanting to see that one for a long time.

Also, I have a suggestion to get more people to watch more of the films of specific filmmakers. Perhaps Kuxa, you can reveal the next filmmaker when you post the thread for the current filmmaker, so that some will have two weeks as opposed to one to catch up.

Thanks for the link Jack and thanks Ruby for PMing it to me.

Having been raised near the Everglades and having Florida so scarcely represented(properly anyhow) in films, I’ve been curious to see that one, especially from a filmmaker of Ray’s caliber. Thanks again.
