I do think with his “great” films…perhaps he brought a sense of documentary realism to them? (I believe his first film was a doc)
I can’t think of Midnight Cowboy without Ratso and Joe Buck walking the streets of New York. Or Hoffman jogging in Marathon Man. Or the “working class” environments of Billy Liar. Even in Pacific Heights…San Francisco emerges as a character.
Perhaps trite. But sometimes movies can have an effect on your relationships with other people. The right movie to put on…when you’re having troubles with your “partner” etc…
Ummm..I’m a teacher too. If they like Transformers…they’re not gonna be into Citizen Kane. You might have use films, better films, within that genre perhaps?
“score” was in quotes, supposed to be drenched in irony.
The larger question queried here…which I hoped the thread would address (and it has to some extent)…is the ability for movies to “set the mood”. Or can any film (or work of art for that matter) generate feelings of genuine romantic emotion between people.

Faces or Woman Under the Influence. You can really get a sense of Cassavetes’ “style”. And see if it’s right for you.

When writing or right before writing a screenplay... almost 4 years ago
Write when you feel like it. Don’t force it. The moment it becomes “work”…it loses all charm for me. I mean…it is work…but you know what I mean.

Not documentary realism. I meant…using real locations. Grounding the movies in that way. The stories, of course, are far from “realism”.

Old adage. Tragedy ends in death. Comedy in a marriage. Classically, the ending of a comedy is the beginning of a “new world”

Any good movie can demonstrate excellent mise-en-scene. It’s all how you teach it. And remember who your students are.
