No, Gus van Sant isn’t consistent (referring to the first post). Gerry was too slow for me even though I liked the idea. I couldn’t stand Elephant or Drugstore Cowboy. I think that maybe he is not for me.
Netflix is terrible Their selection is horrible. You can get films at the library for free… That and unlimited is a joke, because the movies never come fast enough.
Also the end of Nashville and the part in 3 Women where the neighbors make fun of and ridicule Millie (Shelly Duvall). The scene in The Long Goodbye where Elliott Gould asks if he can get anything at the store for his hippy/stoner/female neighbors.
5×2, Swimming Pool, 8 women, Criminal Lovers, etc. Great stuff. I love Time to Leave as well and will watch anything by him. I think his recent work, Angel was so bad. I hope he goes back to making French films. Romola Garai was supposed to be his muse, but I hope he works with Ludivine Sagnier again.
I sat through Brighter Summer Day (almost forgot about that!) and also Gance’s Napoleon in the theater. I don’t think I could go farther beyond that, as I am not a long film person.
On the front page it lists most looked forward to films in December, but it doesn’t even list Doubt!! Plus The Wrestler has been pushed back: 16 January 2009 (USA).
Which American film released this December are you most looking forward to?
Frost/Nixon (Dir. Ron Howard)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (Dir. Scott Derrickson)
Gran Torino (Dir. Clint Eastwood)
Wendy and Lucy (Dir. Kelly Reichardt)
The Wrestler (Dir. Darren Aronofsky)
The Brothers Bloom (Dir. Rian Johnson)
The Spirit (Dir. Frank Miller)
Revolutionary Road (Dir. Sam Mendes)
Valkyrie (Dir. Bryan Singer)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Dir. David Fincher)
I was sick of Clint when he made those Iwo Jima movies. I mean, it sounded like a snore to me. I am not interested in Changeling either. But Million Dollar Baby was good and so was Mystic River. He is pretty old, but he’s still got something in him. Yay!
Most of my favorites have already been mentioned. Gangs of New York was a pretty terrible movie, but Daniel Day Lewis was absolutely cold to the very core in that one. Evil man.
Do you think that Charlie Kaufman will get over his need to NOT explain stuff like the Burning House in Synecdoche, NY one day? After all, it is annoying when filmmakers don’t explain their vision and leave it to the audience to interpret for themselves. I just want to KNOW.
Eventually even Luis Bunuel said there was no reason for the two girls in That Obscure Object of Desire, that Angela Molina left the project, he had a dry double martini and came up with the idea to use Carole Bouquet as the same woman. No harm in that.
And any other Charlie Kaufman related comments are welcome too.

He became overrated the second he made Inland Empire. Dune is bad, otherwise his other films deserve the praise they get.

There is none…….Me? I’d rather that a movie be spoiled for me than not to hear about it at all.

Catherine, oh ok, I wasn’t paying attention to the limited release. I’ve already seen the movie and it’s pretty good.
The trailer for Gran Turino, yes, I was laughing so hard. It may be good/cool, but it didn’t look like it was going to be brilliant.

Most people like Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence. Not my favorite, but I immediately think of her.
