December Films (poll) over 4 years ago

Saw the preview for Wendy and Lucy starring Michelle Williams. It looked ridiculously bad like they were going for a Sherrybaby-like movie.

Is Travis a hero or a villain? over 4 years ago

He is both. Yep ^^. At first I thought he was a villain when I saw the movie, but then the parents wrote him to thank him, so yeah, the lines were meant to be blurred.

Help make The Auteurs totally awesome over 4 years ago

In a way, you could search for Jodorowsky and then find the films on Auteurs and find those who had left good reviews, even if that approach has more steps that would be desirable. I’ve seen 3 films by Jodorowsky and he kind of tortures me. Why 3 then? Well I saw a double feature, then I had already requested a movie by him at the library so I decided I might as well see it. Basically, a week of torture.

Charlie Kaufman over 4 years ago

Thanks. I know David Lynch can be aggravating too. With Mulholland Dr. it was great. With Inland Empire it was nerve-wracking. I guess it just depends. I like to have my own interpretations, but I also like to know what the filmmaker was thinking. Especially since I wanted the burning house to mean something, but I didn’t know what.

Thanks. I appreciate everyone’s comments. But then again I saw Synecdoche for a second time and it didn’t seem to have the same oomph, and I didn’t laugh as much.

Which Movies Have You Walked Out On? over 4 years ago

Shoot ‘Em Up wasn’t that bad! Loved it actually. Mothman Prophecies was bad. You missed out on the very forgettable yet painful quote at the end…

Charlotte that sounds like a good idea (being able to add auteurs). Maybe there could be some kind of master list or link to IMDB so duplicates aren’t added (just in case).

Blu-ray is stupid to me. I already get a certain amount of quality with DVDs and I am not interested in new formats.

I don’t think of Roman Holiday and The Graduate as comedies, but I like them too.

Is Cinema dying? over 4 years ago

Maybe not dying, but it seems to be stagnant. There were great periods: silent, beginning sound, pre-code, censored cinema (which coincidentally was the Golden Age of Hollywood). Then when censorship was finally lifted, people made “daring” films. But nothing shocks anymore, so what are we to do? The French New Wave is over and movies like Four Christmases are #1. I saw it this wkend and I knew it would probably be lousy, but I wasted my time anyway. There either needs to be a new film development or something. I don’t foresee anything interesting happening anytime soon.

Your interpretation of this film over 4 years ago

This film was Lynch’s most poorly-lit film to date. Seeing it on the big screen was a huge disappointment. I wish the Rabbits segments were CUT OUT.

Roman Holiday is a delightful movie and one of my favorites, but I find it hard to think of it as a comedy.

Baxter, I have been looking through this thread and there are some ppl your age. The young shouldn’t feel bad and neither should the old. We’re a film community and can learn from each other. It’s all good.

CONFESSIONS--FILMS YOU ARE ASHAMED TO SAY YOU HAVE NOT SEEN (YET) over 4 years ago

There’s a lot of DW Griffith that I have seen, but stuff like Intolerance that weirdly enough I haven’t seen.
I haven’t seen ANY Tarkovsky, although I tried watching Solaris years ago.

I don’t like the Dardenne Bros. either, but they are not bad enough to post it 10 times. ;)

Well, I was thinking and I am not a fan of JJ Abrams either. I would most definitely avoid anything he does.

HITCHCOCK over 4 years ago

Hitchcock was from England sure, but he started making American films and then infiltrated US homes starting in the fifties with his TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents, which contained some really quality material. Several of his films are my favorites, and he was an important part of my childhood. A million thumbs up for Hitch.

Closet Oscar Fans? over 4 years ago

I went to this Oscars “Great To Be Nominated” series that the Academy presented in Beverly Hills. And the producer noted that each film that was nominated was superior, and that they all can’t win. And that they have a tough time picking the winners. That is understandable. My opinion: basically awards shows are there to generate publicity, basically. Dramas aren’t the big moneymakers; action movies and comedies movies are. Therefore it makes sense that mostly dramas are nominated. A lot of people will go see the “winners” and/or nominees, movies they wouldn’t otherwise see.
