I like so many listed in this thread but one person who’s sorely omitted by all is Maurice Jarre(unless I missed him on someone’s post). He should be listed just for his scores on Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago alone.
Most movie chains in the US will be rolling out 4k projectors in the next few years. It’ll allow theaters to have a similar setup where you can reserve times to watch specific movies.

Godard – Breathless
Hitchcock – Vertigo
Bunuel – That Obscure Object of Desire

Kubrick – 2001: A Space Odyssey
I recently read an article where they cite that the most likely case with Van Gogh was that he and his best friend got into a duel. His friend cut off his ear and when the police came, decided to not give him up and tell them that he did it himself. Kind of destroys one of the all-time great stories of genius/madman.

Rescue Dawn is said to be inaccurate on many things when it came to that particular story. There’s even a website set up by families of the people portrayed in the movie to support this.
I recently saw a costume drama(during the time of Louis XIV) that was recommended to me by someone that I had never heard of. It’s called Vatel. Directed by Roland Joffe(The Killing Fields) starring Gerard Depardieu, Uma Thurman, Julian Sands and Tim Roth. Written by Tom Stoppard who co-wrote Brazil among many other things. Last but definitely not least, there’s a score by Ennio Morricone. Not a masterpiece, but an enjoyable film nonetheless.
Martin Scorsese
Bernardo Bertolucci
Elia Kazan
Sergio Leone
Francis Ford Coppola
Terry Gilliam
Michael Mann
Quentin Tarantino
Alfonso Cuaron
John Frankenheimer
Roland Joffe
Kenneth Branagh
James Mangold
Harold Ramis
Brian De Palma
Michael Cimino
I’m not sure how to post pics or even link properly, but just copy and paste that. AICN has a few screen grabs which are pretty good quality. The movie looks gorgeous.
There’s a few Allen pictures that are unfortunately OOP. I remember going to purchase both Sweet and Lowdown and Deconstructing Harry only to find out that both of them had been OOP for a few years.
I know Charlie Kaufman has stated many times that he doesn’t watch very many movies. Despite popular belief, he said he hadn’t seen 8 1/2 and so there was no way it had influenced him when making Synecdoche, New York.
Just watched it the other night and had a very love/hate relationship with it. I thought it to be boring, frustrating and brilliant all in one. The hotel had the same eerie feeling you got from The Shining. The photography was at times very awe inspiring as well. I just got bored with it’s almost repetitious nature.
I’m glad I’ve already seen this movie or else the title of this thread would really piss me off. The reason she killed herself was she was feeling weaker and said that 80 was just the right age to go. She had no qualms about dying and she felt she had lived a long and prosperous life.
I’ve yet to see this and it’s not been available on Netflix for a few months. I love the cast and I enjoyed Foley’s work on Twin Peaks. I’ve contemplated buying it on Amazon but very rarely do blind buys.
I’m a huge McCarthy fan but I’ve yet to read this. I know they currently have Todd Field tapped to do this. He’s a great director and I’m interested in what he could do with a McCarthy work myself. I also know that Andrew Dominik(The Assassination of Jesse James….and Chopper) is doing Cities On The Plain as well.
I believe analyzing this film too much diminishes it’s effectiveness. I once watched it trying to analyze it and it lost the completely cerebral experience with other viewings that I had. It’s one of the few things I completely agree with Ebert about.
I think the biggest problem with Pacino and De Niro is that they came up as method actors and now with old age and doing roles that are caricatures of themselves, it has caused them to completely throw away the acting style they were so great with. You can’t tell me that De Niro makes the kind of commitments like he did back in the day. Living in Sicily for a few months before doing Godfather 2, grinding his teeth for Cape Fear, being a cab driver for 3 months for Taxi Driver, gaining 60 pounds for Raging Bull etc. You think he made any kind of sacrifices like that to get into character for most any of his roles in the last 10-15 years? Same could be said for Pacino I’m sure.
Does anyone know if this works for boxsets as well? I was thinking of getting John Cassavetes- Five Films if it was. With 50% off, it’d only be 50 bucks.
It’s one of the several films of his I’ve not seen. Heard good things though. I also enjoyed Scoop and Whatever Works on purely comedic terms. They’re overall lower grade Woody Allen to me though.
