The only real problem with the BBFC for me is that the fees to get films classified has probably affected the chances of some obscure films getting DVD releases. Aside from that, I am extremely glad we have them. There have only been a few occasions where I’ve been annoyed by their decisions – such as the cuts to Ichi the Killer – but considering how much they’ve changed since the 80s and 90s, I have complete trust in their decisions because they are level headed and stand their ground against complaints from conservative politicians and members of the public. A film being banned is a once-in-a-blue-moon occasion now.
The recent debate on smoking in films shows this, where groups have suggested films with smoking should have higher ratings. Yes, I do have concerns about smoking being promoted to children and teenagers, but I find the amount of anti-smoking campaigns absolutely pointless and annoying, and I am on the BBFC’s side on not changing their policies.
Apocalpyse Salem – They removed a scene in which a woman’s nipple was cut off for sexual violence. Now, I haven’t seen the scene, but it does make me ask questions about its removal bar my belief against censorship. First of all, if I’m right, you don’t actually seen the blade touch skin and Miike cut aways from it (unlike in other parts of the film). Second of all, I have always wondered what would happen if the BBFC had in front of them a scene of a man’s nipple being cut off. Is that sexual violence too and does it warrant being removed? Censorship is a strange thing even if the question like I’ve just asked is ridiculous.
Ozufan – Thankfully I have rarely gone to cinema showings where there were obnoxious kids. Now university students drunk and stoned out of their heads at the back of the cinema seats is another matter all together, as I found when seeing Tom Ford’s A Single Man.
Apocalpyse Salem – I really have a problem with the anti-smoking mindset Britain has now. My parents have smoked since they were young, and while they have reinforced into me and my siblings since a young age that they regret doing so and that we shouldn’t start the habit, they have every right to smoke without people thinking its some sort of plague. Just the TV advertisements on quitting smoking alone feels bullying and patronising than actually helpful.
I presume film festivals have allowances to show certain films that might have difficulty being released normally. I wouldn’t use a film with graphic sex acts thought as an example, as many now (Shortbus, Baise-Moi) get releases without any censorship. Something like the Warren Oates’ film Cockfighter is a better example as it has been shown at British film festivals but cannot be released because of animal cruelty laws.
Apocalypse Salem – I have only heard bad things about the smoking ban in pubs. I don’t think the Labour government and anti-smoking campaigners created a great relationship between them and pub owners when they change the law.
Hi, I felt I should post on this thread as, while I did not sign up to manage any of the directors, I do want join in the proceedings. I may not be able to see all the films, but I hope I will be able to see as many movies as I can can and vote on them. Last year, before signing onto the site, I watched on as the original World Cup took place, and in comparison this year’s competition seems just as diverse and interesting as the last one was. In particular the following matches really interest me -
Takashi Miike: Visitor Q Vs. Stan Brakhage: Black Ice
Terrence Malick: Days of Heaven Vs. Isao Takahata: Only Yesterday
Also, the Tarkovsky versus Bill Douglas match is looking like its going to one of the most heated matches in my opinion of the first round; as encouragement to finally see Comrades goes, this match is the best way you can do so.

While I can appreciate the reasons to change the name, I’m not fond of the choice ‘MUBI’. Unless it’s actually an acronym, it doesn’t mean anything.
