How Well Do Directors Understand Their Own Films? about 2 years ago

I always liked Bob Dylan’s response to when critics and interviewers would ask him what his songs are about, which he would always become very defensive. He’d retatliate by asking them what THEY thought it was about and that what he thinks about it doesn’t really matter because it’s not supposed to be that way.

if director’s were to let us in on exactly what they think their work is about, then watching films wouldn’t be as much fun. we’d have a preconceived notion as to what we are supposed to think about the work and leaves no room for creative thinking which is what art should inspire.

Best Films With Musicians in the Lead Role(s) about 2 years ago

@RACHELLEIGH I really do like Meatloaf’s performance in Fight Club but I wouldn’t say it’s the only good part. The stylish directions and soundtrack are two of the best parts of the film. Let’s also not forget Jared Leto’s Angel Face character getting his shit beat in.

I guess this doesn’t necessarily count cause it’s a tv show but Loudon Wainwright III on Undeclared. Probably the best part of that show along with Jason Segal.

Actors/Actresses that have never been in a good movie(minimum 5 Films) about 2 years ago

Jason Biggs (although I think Saving Silverman is funny, mostly because of Steve Zahn)
Chris Elliot (well he is just NOT good as a whole)
Katherin Heigel(sp.?) (i thought Knocked Up was ok but not because of her)

Watch List -- do you follow it? about 2 years ago

I used to go to the library with certain films I wanted to see in mind but now I go and grab whatever strikes me first. I usually try to get films that I haven’t watched and I also try to stick to certain directors (if there work is available to me).

I just watched Discreet Charm… for the third time(comes on Sundance a lot) and now I’m going to watch Phantom of Liberty. Those are the only Bunuel films at my library but I’ve also started working through some Altman films. I just watched Short Cuts last week, Nashville about 2 weeks ago and A Prarie Home Companion a month ago. Next on the Altman kick is 3 Women I can’t wait to view. I think next week I will get my Bergman on and view Wild Strawberries and The Magic Flute.

I’ve found that my local library has allowed me to check a lot of films of my list but it’s sad that not everyone has that kind privilege.

The longest movie you've ever sat through about 2 years ago

Hardboiled is kind of long, although I think the Dragon Dynasty DVD cover lies about the running time a bit. I thought A Woman Under The Influence was long but I think I was just emotionally worn out by it. I watched Magnolia and Short Cuts back to back the other night which was about a total of 6 hours and 15 minutes or something like that. It was a good night though

films that should be released on Criterion but that never will be about 2 years ago

-The Player dir. Robert Altman
I think it’s a great film that I can rarely find at video stores. I think the supplements would be great, especially if they had an in depth making of…the opening shot. Also, the great interviews they could get with other celebrities featured in the film would be a nice touch.

-Husbands dir. John Cassavetes
I know it’s been released (I own the available DVD copy) but a Criterion release would do this film more justice. It would also be nice if they could release Cassavetes four hour cut of the film but I’m pretty sure that one is lost in the world of cut down footage that is Cassavetesland.

The Motherly Advice Thread about 2 years ago

growin a beard has never been an issue for me but I recently shaved it all off and actually liked the way I looked without it. now, it’s growing back in and I couldn’t be happier. shaving is like age regression for me: I go from 24 to 18 in a matter of five minutes.

3 Women Dir./Scr. Robert Altman 8.5/10

Just finished watching it and I’m still at a loss for perspective on this film. Shelly Duvall’s perfomance is well done but Sissy Spacek steals the film as Pinky Rose. Altman’s camera work, especially the use of the fish tank/wave pool as washing over characters was a wonderful touch. The artwork throughout the film is actually one of my favorite parts and gave me perspective into the women’s relationship/how they are linked. I look forward to watching this again and again because it’s the kind of film, much like David Lynch’s work, that unfolds something new to you as you watch it more and think more about it.

I’m more than happy to take it off your hand when you are finished possibly hating it.

Also, is your Walgreens an arthouse or something cause my local Walgreen’s has a minority of good films and way too many copies of American Crude?

HOW MANY FILMS CAN YOU WATCH IN A DAY? DEPENDING ON YOUR MOOD about 2 years ago

on average, it’s about two films a day and on a good day, it’s maybe four. when i watch more than one or two a day, I try to watch films that vary drastically from each other as to not have things run together in my mind. So, I might watch Die Hard, Band Of Outsiders and Adaptation to mix it up a little bit. exception is if I watch Kill Bill Vol. 1 then Kill Bill Vol. 2 has to proceed it.

The Ending: Making or Breaking a Film about 2 years ago

I think the ending to Husbands is perfect for the film that comes before it. We see Ben Gazarra’s character as the third wheel of the friendship but still a loved and embraced member of the trio. When he decides to stay in London and his friends make their way back home, it sinks in exactly what they have done and what they have ultimately lost: another friend. The cherry on top is when Peter Falk and John Cassavetes arrive at their homes and divide up their gifts they just recently purchased at the airport (probably out of guilt). Cassavets asks Falk over and over again, “What’s he gonna do without us?”. As they part ways, Falk stops and asks Cassavetes, “What’s he gonna do without us?!”. Cassavetes goes to his house and his kids and the life that is, tragically and happily, his own.

@MULEYHAVEN I once saw some stand up from him and thought it was decent but as far as films go, I don’t think he’s had a great run. He peaked at There’s Something About Mary and that’s just sad.

What kind of TVs do you guys have? about 2 years ago

throughout my whole life ( i’m 24) i’ve never had the pleasure of owning a big screen tv or anything of that nature, so the new craze of HD and LCD doesn’t bother me at all. i’ll stick to my 27" Magnavox, even if the color goes out every once in a while.

Artistic Talent-nature vs. nurture about 2 years ago

some people are naturally talented in their crafts but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have to nurture that into something more. i mean, michael jordan was probably born a gifted athlete but it doesn’t mean that he didn’t practice his free throws and three point shot. i’ve known plenty of naturally gifted people, whether they were musicians, wrtiers, etc., that have squandered their talent away because nurturing it was actually work. plus, if all talent came naturally we wouldn’t appreciate it because we would never know what it takes to really mold and shape that talent into something more.

improvement should always be a constant.

@LIKE2SLEEP I’ve found that some David Lynch DVD’s come with an option to adjust the picture on your screen so it’s the best viewing quality for film. I’ve never actually done it but i’ve found it on Inland Empire and The Short Films of David Lynch

The Ending: Making or Breaking a Film about 2 years ago

@KATE I love the ending to A Woman Under The Influence because it is so abrupt after the whole fiasco that takes place before it. Plus, it shows that the two main characters really do love each other, despite all their faults. I found it to be rather comical, especially with the music playing over it.

When You Don't Like a "Great" Film Because You Don't Understand It about 2 years ago

I am right there with you Jazz and I think anyone who say otherwise is probably lying through their teeth. I think not being able to pinpoint the core of a film that you really love is a beautiful thing. Human beings love each other but we don’t necessarily understand each other but nonetheless…

Art isn’t always meant to be interpreted and dissected into something we can wrap our minds around. The great thing about art, especially films, is we are able to ponder them endlessly and come to many different conclusions about how we feel. I’ve seen films and then watched them years later and got an entirely different feeling from them.

New Wide Releases For the Week of March 18, 2011 about 2 years ago

I think Paul has a lot of potential to be a great pre-summer comedy. Sure, another Rogen movie is not what we need or want right now but he is playing an alien so we won’t have to actually see him. Plus, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg are always great together.
