I don’t know if anyone said the entrance of the Copa Cabana (I think it’s called) in Goodfellas. And while Russian Ark was technically impressive, the plot left much to be desired.
Vertigo also gave the world the “Hitchcock Zoom” or “Dolly Zoom” if we want to get technical. I don’t have much to add to what has already been said. Vertigo is an amazing film, and sits in my top 3 films of all time.
I’ve been trying as of late to get into the X-rated underground 70s cinema movement. They’re just so damn hard to find. My latest venture was The Telephone Book, considered “THE GONE WITH THE WIND of 60’s/70’s Underground Cinema” by author Richard Winters, and it was absolutely beautiful. So much fun and I truly enjoyed Sarah Kennedy’s performance. It’s not as risque as some of the films you mentioned like “Deep Throat” or “Blow Job” but by the “American Standard” it’s a devilish film. There’s an awesome scene where 10 women or so are just gyrating on top of one guy, fully nude, it was beautiful.
I suggest Screening Sex by Linda Williams for anyone who wants to learn more about this movement, it’s an interesting read and truly eye opening to the detriment the Hays Code was, and the beauty that emerged once it was dismantled.
As a fan of the original cartoon, I will watch this film. I KNOW M. Night will ruin it, and it will solidify my hatred for his directing. The Happening, my god, I haven’t laughed so hard at a film since I Accuse.
They’ve done it before, in the 30s mostly, so it should be a good thing. They’ve even gone up to 12. Frankly I just think they’re trying to appease fans of certain films like Wall-E and The Dark Knight which caused uproar when they weren’t nominated. The winner will still be something cliche.
Vixen!, Russ Meyer 1968
This one is more so for history’s sake. It’s one of the first films to take sex all the way. Instead of having the audience assume they’ve had sex (a la Casablanca) they put sex out there and let us know “Oh yea, they’re doing this.”
Last Tango in Paris, Bernardo Bertolucci 1972
Along with Deep Throat, initiated the sexual revolution to come. I figure a lot of you have seen it, so why go into detail.
In The Realm of Senses, Oshima Nagisa 1976
Just released on Criterion, so you won’t have a tough time finding this gem. To get around Japanese censors, this film had to use French stock, develop and edit in France. This also tests the waters by showing full on fellatio. It’s really quite a site. If you’ve seen Last Tango in Paris, it seem like a remake, and in fact Nagisa wanted to tell a story similar to what had garnered so much attention over in our world, but they’re so different in delivery.
Boys in the Sand, Wakefield Poole 1971
This one can be very difficult to watch. All I’ll say is, boys blowing boys. I’ll leave you with that little tease and hope you watch it. On a technical stand point, it’s an amazing film to watch. Lighting wise, it uses natural light, so at times shadows may obscure your view of certain “actions” and it’s not really trying to glorify or beautify the act of sex, like say Deep Throat.
Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Melvin Van Peebles 1971
“Opening credit boobs, you never get opening credit boobs.” More so you’re thrown into the action from the opening credits. It’s an amazing Sexploitation/Blaxploitation film that should be seen by anyone.
I’m more of a long take man myself. I don’t really care, but there are times when I feel a film is overly edited (Doomsday, please don’t watch this movie).
Except, Shyamalan only has one good film. And if someone makes the utter garbage that is The Happening they deserve to get criticized and made fun of for the rest of their life.
Alma Moore: We can’t just stand here as uninvolved observers!
Elliot Moore: I need a second okay? Just give me a second!
Alma Moore: We’re not gonna be one of those assholes on the news who watches a crime happen and not do something! We’re not assholes!
Elliot Moore: Just a second!
Had this been 2007, I’d be bashing Lady In The Water. If it was 2005, it would be The Village. The Happening just happens to be the freshest in my mind, so that’s what will get my full attention.
I just watched Vanilla Sky and was genuinely upset that Cameron Crowe destroyed Open Your Eyes. Like, I really wanted to hurt the man.
And The Beef (Shia Lebouf) had the nerve to work on Disturbia, rehashing Rear Window. (I blame The Beef because if it wasn’t for him, it wouldn’t be as popular.)
I do not like her. I just can’t stand looking at her. Yes, that’s a very un-cinephile thing to say, but I feel the same way about Kirsten Dunst. Some people I just don’t like to look at for an extended period of time.
Maybe it’s all this bravado swimming through me. :(
Drew — It really depends on if you feel it warrants VO. Can you convey enough information without it. Does the information being said warrant a VO. Every situation is different, so it doesn’t have to have it, but if it works with it, go right on ahead.
And you better have a Femme Fatale, or I’ll be highly upset.
I haven’t seen Catch Me If You Can, but it’s not hard to believe that Spielberg payed some sort of homage to Truffaut. All directors take from one another.
God, July is looking damn good. June wasn’t that great of a month (Cinespia wise) and my god does that Varda-thon look great. I just don’t want to go to Santa Monica.
Oh no, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate her as a person. I don’t hate anyone. I just don’t like her on screen. I can meet her (or Kirsten Dunst) and have a riveting conversation, but I don’t want her on my silver screen.
