I’m not a big fan of the Archers, I think their films can seem a little overcooked, but Colonel Blimp is brilliant. “Jingoism” may be a bit excessive, but I thought that aspect of the film was hilarious and made it even more enjoyable
What the fuck. That is such absolute shit I don’t even… Could he possibly make bigger generalisations!? You can judge a whole group of people like that, positively or negatively you fucking idiot Ebert. And what the hell is this crap:
Because we do not often think of ourselves as animals, it is rather wonderful that women retain one function from their evolutionary past. They have breasts, and use them to feed infants. Think about that. In terms of body weight, they tend to have larger breasts than most mammals, although breast size has no particular relationship to feeding ability. One obvious reason for larger breasts, therefore, is to send a signal to prospective mates that they are promising candidates for motherhood. You may not realize this when you see a crowd of half-loaded guys in a lap-dance joint, but in some primeval sense they’re looking for mothers—perhaps their own.
What the hell!? Just shut up Ebert! We know you have a record of writing stupid things and then regretting them; once again you have made “very poor judgement” in writing this entry.
Oh this comment from that page is great:
Really, Roger?
This is the most pathetic attempt at boot licking that I have had the misfortune to witness recently.
… Not all mothers are created equal, so let’s not go around giving people a big pat on the back for the genitals they were born with.
“Women” may be better than your fat ass, but they are not better than mine as a class. In my case, some women might be better than me in some respects while others may be worse. Genitalia does not enter the equation.
I was not even particularly offended by the initial comments which is why I hadn’t said anything but I could certainly see that those who were had a point and chipped in with me two cents.
I think I have made it clear quite a few times now that I was never offended, just pointing out the hypocrisy and that it is a two way street.
cuz we all know that’s what nazis were about, ensuring people’s rights were respected, right? u may appoint a male ‘nazi’ if u want but since we’re outnumbered more than 10 to 1 here i doubt it will be necessary
Ms Stevens, I think you understand what I meant when I said that, so it’s sort of an unfair comment to make in that context.
You shouldn’t have to follow a set of rules just so people don’t think you’re a troll, what a load of shit. Maybe it should be “How not to mistake people for trolls.”
Ms Stevens, I’m sorry that you have taken such personal offence to this, and I hope you can accept my apology. There, you have it, and that was only directed at Ruby as well, you’re definitely not getting one Ms Hopkins.
Cold, unfeeling type films, like those of Kubrick are overly accepted, and if someone champions the unheard-of, no matter the actual quality of the film they are seen as brave viewers, but if one defends a blockbuster, hey must be shunned by the mubi elite.
The mubi-style is inconsistent, as films a beautifully crafted work of art like Anti-Christ is crapped on, while crap like The Doom Generation is accepted as art.
All very well said and all very true (especially about Doom Generation being crap).
About the whole “witch” thing, I always interpreted the main theme of the film to be grief, and that scene of her thinking back to the death of the child with her watching him fall out the window was because she felt responsible. I think without this it is much more of a film about insanity, and I really don’t think Von Trier was going for that.

Ebert also says: The man is looking for boobs.
Um, are you trying to tell us something with your paragraph about how great breasts are Ebert??

Sorry Jazz, that wasn’t directed at you at all, I should have been more specific. It was actually only at Mr Cinematic Cteve.

And yes I do agree with your points Jazz, though I personally don’t mind the occasional “utter jerk”; they can be thoroughly entertaining.

Pasolini’s Medea should be listed under 110 minutes not 118.
To my knowledge the 110 minutes version is the longest available.

I saw recently that someone interpreted Aguirre: the Wrath of God as a film about loneliness. I disagreed completely, but it is interesting…

But I’m not saying I dislike this “mubi style”, I have found many great films thanks to mubi users and their unique tastes.
