This is the first WKW that I didn't like. I have to admit that I delayed the viewing for almost eight months: we're talking about a suggestive and visually stunning opera, but the point is something's missing. I just don't know what. I'm not disappointed, I'm just very very sad.
Introduction to the film by the wonderful Chris Sieving: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYINdmSyhRA
Made me realize what WKW was saying when he talked about how deceiving Leung's character was in "In the Mood For Love," which continues here. More than anything I felt like this was a revealing of how he really was as a character and represented more of a hedonistic darkness to his character.
I never imagined Wong taking In The Mood For Love's electric eroticism so literally.
Can you take your eyes off of Zhang’s qípáo long enough to appreciate her brilliant performance? I dare you! 2046 features a coterie of strong women who carry a seemingly unfinished, troubled film. Chow’s narration is a slapdash attempt to unify a(n unsalvageable?) visual narrative. The film’s emphatic reiteration of poignant lines is slavish and inoculates the audience against their previous emotional impact.
I kind of loved this, though I feel most find it disappointing, especially following Wai's lush and ravishing In the Mood For Love. Some found his follow up confusing and meandering. I personally loved the places Wai and his characters take us. Two different times and places where the real life so much so reflects fiction that one wonders if one or the other is an illusion, or both may be. Just beautiful.
one of the best films i have seen. the shots are perfect, with their lighting, their movement, every frame is a piece of art. the acting is fantastic yet again, with the links between other films brilliant interwined. the film is occupied with the ideas of the movements upon which love hinges. the concept of lost love and its after-effect are seen throughout. this is wong kar wai's masterpiece.
Every shot is exquisitely framed; the music, period-perfect wardrobe and setting create palpable atmosphere. A different dimension of "In The Mood...", and the kind of film I wanted to never end. ★★★★
What an epic piece of crap! No amount of stylish cinematography and fancy costumes can make up for the boring, cheap love story and cheesy dialogue. If I want to watch a movie that for the most part consists of a guy scoring with chicks, I'll watch some porn.
The more I think about this film, the more I adore it. Give yourself a space of around five minutes to really think about what you just saw after you finish it and I guarantee you'll start to marvel at the poignancy and ambition of the film.
painful , poetic and artistic , Wong Kar Wai is not an artist , he is a magician ........... The story was somewhat complex whic in my opinion weakened the film a little bit but in all the other aspects the film was stylish , amazing and near perfect ........ Directing , editing , cinematography , music , acting all soo great
I just came up with an interesting screenplay idea inspired by Wong Kar-wai's 2046 and taking the red eye on new year's eve. If anyone wants to hear it, message me.
love. love. love Cristopher doyle. he is a genius. the tear drop scene haunts me....
though i would say a little long perhaps, this is still a wonderful movie and a great companion to one of the best films ever made.
