Uneven newspaper melodrama from producer-director-star Jack Webb is fast-paced with a likable cast (particularly a surprisingly charismatic Webb, playing against his more familiar Joe Friday stoicism), but where it runs into problems is with its varying tones, uneasily weaving between snappy comedy, suspense, and overly earnest sentimentality. Not a terrible movie, but not a classic.
