An ostensible making-of wherein the dashboard worldview of Ten now captures Kiarostami in the driver’s seat, expounding on his body of work and technique in ten ‘lessons’, using the same dialectic approach and structure. The car being his favoured setting: too small for director or crew, but only a camera, and his (non-)actors, amidst Kiarostami’s search for the most natural cinema, and of the liberating frontier of digital. That his insights only ever appear intelligent, mature and honest means this self-portrait is but a fascinating one.
"A friend told me, 'while others are cultivating land, you are growing vegetables in a flowerpot'."
Stefan is right. But not only aspiring filmmakers should watch this. Every aspiring artist and every appreciator of art should watch this. The pursuit of truth is the essence of art and it's time to recognise that digital video is bringing the art of film closer to truth than it ever has been. Instead of mourning a non-existent golden age, we should be celebrating this new age of unfettered truth. Fuck 3D.
