I just sat down and watched Twelve Monkeys because I saw it sitting in my DVD collection. It was one of those movies I went and saw with my parents when I was 11 or 12 years old and it probably didn’t make much sense to me back then but always stuck in my mind. From the opening credits with that hectic acordian music and that crazy monkey graphic, i don’t know, as a kid I must of just been fascinated by it.
Watching it just now it still lived up to all those expectations and stands up there still as one of my favourite films. I loved it when I was a kid and I think I will love it as long as I live. Films like this seem to just speak to my inner self, “the inner child” whatever it is, that part of me that hasn’t changed since I was 12.
However, the film itself, i think has a great script which is always a merit to a film, especially one that plays out as a puzzle like this one. If the script is successful enough, will lead the audience in every which way and another and this film is no exception to that. It happens to be a script that does that and manages to pull it off. It’s a well planned and thought out adventure that doesn’t feel like that. It feels more like a map of the human brain. One of those studied essays by a reknowned psychologist that can make every dissection of the way the human mind works into pages and pages of literature, however, the question still remains about those unexplained nasties that still exist at the end of the passage. What’s that loving thing that makes each and every one of us human.
Well, maybe this film didn’t set out to explore that whole psycho analysis thing, but I think it does the next best thing. To just try to explain a feeling someone has, which in the world can sometimes be the hardest thing to try and explain, and even if it doesn’t come across correctly at least it made the attempt. And they at least got the script right.

I feel as though I’m always missing a vital piece of information when I watch Terry Gilliam’s movies. With the exception of the Python movies, I’ve never walked out of one feeling like he fully realized what he was going for. Unfortunately, this film was no exception to that rule for me. Very good, but by no means great.
The problem, though, is probably with me, and 12 Monkeys is certainly worth the old once over.
