Assembled from over 30 hours of interviews with the controversial heavyweight champion, director James Toback takes the helm for a feature-length documentary exploring the life and career of self-destructive pugilist Mike Tyson. From his early years under the wing of famed boxing promoter Don King to his notorious match against Evander Holyfield and his conviction on sexual assault charges, Tyson’s turbulent life is explored in the kind of comprehensive manner that could only have been made possible with the subject’s willing participation. — allmovie guide
This is the perfect documentary of a difficult subject. Tyson speaks from the heart here with a candidness that is extremely rare in public life. I don't feel sorry for him—how many untold millions suffer similarly brutal life circumstances without recognition—but in my eyes Tyson reveals an admirable quality of self-reflection, emotional intelligence and raw humanity that far surpasses most of his associates.
A very honest look at someone who had the world at his feet. I liked that it was all Tyson speaking, and not a bunch of people with no importance/nothing really important to say.
Engrossing and candid documentary exploring the tumultuous life and very complicated personality of the boxing legend. Some of director James Toback's stylistic flourishes are a bit over the top, but it is at its strongest when focusing on Tyson's honest, revealing interviews. Even if your not interested in boxing, this is a fascinating character study.
