Our take

Part murder mystery, part dark satire of the Franco regime, Fernando Fernán Gómez’s classic drama shows how modernity—represented by the sexy, snaking twist—wreaks havoc on a provincial Spanish town. Based on a real-life murder in ’60s Murcia, the film starred exploitation filmmaker Jess Franco.
