This movie is incredible. It has the reputation of being a horrible mess(thanks to Kit Carson’s great making of feature, American Dreamer), so some people may come in ready to hate it, but you will be surprised. Clearly there was a more traditional 3 act plot structure to the film originally, but Hopper felt comfortable to throw that out the window while editing, in favor of something that resembles a series of memories and collected moments-every single scene taken on its own is incredibly strong. It’s wildly textured, emotionally intense, covers a lot of thematic ground, but its all of a piece-it works. There’s images and moments in this that will stay with you. It’s a fascinating movie to say the least.
