The cast is phenomenal. It includes some of the best french actresses, such as Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, Isabelle Huppert and Ludivine Sagnier. Also the fact that there is only one male actor (who can only be 'seen' in a few scenes) and besides that just 8 other actresses brings a great atmosphere to this movie. It can focus more on every single character and the story is very exciting.
a very wonderful & puzzling movie, with some great conversations - but i really didn't like the musical parts, but it was worth it & great entertainment..!
I just realized that many of the songs mention either film or cinema. A true director always references movies, even when it is inside a movie.
I must say, I loved the theatrical aspect to it. The acting was also impressive. And the whole plot kept me hooked till the very end, as the truth still seemed a bit unsure to me.
Highly reminiscent of a play, since the story is practically in the room of the mansion and only during one night, François Ozon surprise anyone expecting heavy dramas, leading a slight plot, and end with a doubly unexpected. In the end the question remains: is there really is only one responsible for the death of Marcel? www.cinemadebuteco.com
I'm confused. I'm really glad to see these strange dancing and songs. But the plot is quite simple. Hmm
These 8 femmes are 3 generations of such talented actresses. These ladies fit just perfectly in their roles. Excelent cast. There's something unexpected about Fanny Ardant and Catherine Deneuve...(: I loved the technicolor screen, the plot and its wonderful absurdity.
Oh it was more than a taste of misogyny. This wasn't terrible, but I wasn't a fan of the musical numbers at all.
A seemingly straightforward melodrama that I, for one, had to mull over for weeks after viewing. I do, however, wish that the musical numbers were a bit more over-the-top, so that they might fit the overall mood more closely.
