Mario Bava

Mario Bava was born in Sanremo, Liguria, Italy. The son of Eugenio Bava, a sculptor who became a pioneer of special effects photography and subsequently one of the great cameramen of Italian silent pictures, Mario Bava’s first ambition was to become a painter. Unable to turn out paintings at a profitable rate, he went into his father’s business, working as an assistant to other Italian cinematographers like Massimo Terzano, while also offering assistance to his father who headed the special effects department at Benito Mussolini’s film factory, the Instituto LUCE.

Bava became a cinematographer in his own right in 1939, shooting two short films with Roberto Rossellini. He made his feature debut in the early 1940s. Bava’s camerawork was an instrumental factor in developing the screen personas of such stars of the period as Gina Lollobrigida, Steve Reeves and Aldo Fabrizi.

Still confuses me, yet its also one of my favorites from Bava with a few interesting insights. Its interesting how Bava seems to be parodying a genre that he's actually inventing, like the slasher movies that follow it Bava seems to be punishing bad behavior but here its not banal teenage behavior, its that almost everyone is a potential killer. This insight is the most ironic in the brilliant ending. Worth seeing.

By Twitchfilm.com on May 17, 2011
I know we’ve already had a review from the very capable keyboard of James Dennis, but I can’t help wanting to chime in on this package.  He summarized the plot quite nicely, so I think I’ll borrow that

A BAY OF BLOOD Blu-ray Review

By Twitchfilm.com on May 17, 2011
Like some deranged, X-rated episode of Miss Marple, Mario Bava’s giallo slasher crossover is a gleefully sinister tale where anyone and everyone is a suspect. Beautiful, blackly comic and disturbing it

Has it really taken four years for a company to realize that Mario Bava’s entire oeuvre is perfect for Blu-ray?  Apparently so, at least it is being done up right by one of the current kings of the international
