Synopsis

Doing it tough in East LA, Carlos (Mexican star Demián Bichir) tends the gardens of wealthy cross town Los Angelinos. He worries for the future of his wayward son Luis, who is flirting with gang culture, often missing school. And there’s the ever present threat of being discovered by Immigration Officials. Weitz himself has Mexican ancestry, and this film is based on what he describes as the best script he’s read since he started making films two decades ago. –Edinburgh Film Festival

I chose to watch it due to the Oscar nomination of the protagonist and indeed I saw a very powerful performance of this stoic and dignified Mexican immigrant in the USA trying to provide a better life for his son. However, outside this noteable performance the film is both predictable and full of clichés and thus will quickly be forgotten.
