Synopsis

Richard Attenborough‘s epic all-star re-creation of the Arnhem debacle: Field Marshal Montgomery and General Eisenhower’s plan to parachute 35,000 Allied troops into the Netherlands and take six bridges that would have shortened the war considerably. Operation Market Garden was the codename of this allied operation towards the end of the W.W.II that all went horribly wrong, bad weather conditions and the troops running into a Panzer division resting in Arnhem that wasn’t supposed to be there. The battle scenes are highly effective and everyone is on parade for this one: Dirk Bogarde, the cool c-in-c; Edward Fox, the larger-than-life Horrocks; Gene Hackman a heroic Pole; Anthony Hopkins stoically surrounded; plus Connery, Caine, Redford, Olivier and all. —Britmovie.co.uk

One of England’s most respected actors and directors, Sir Richard Attenborough has made numerous contributions to world cinema both in front of and behind the camera. After three years of service with the Royal Air Force, Attenborough rose to film stardom in the 1947 film version of Brighton Rock — a role that caused him to be typecast as a working-class misfit over the next few years. One of the best of his characterizations in this vein can be found in The Guinea Pig (1948… read more

A bit too long and complicated. I guess it's typical in Attenborough films. I was lost in some scenes. Still, there are some good moments (especially, the jumping off of the paratroopers from the planes. The paratroopers were like mushrooms or a bunch of jellyfish gradually falling from the sky. It is delightful.) and good performances.
