Synopsis

Claude Chabrol, with nearly 60 features behind him, is at the top of his game with this mordant social satire, filled with unforgettably nasty characters and inspired by the sensational Gilded Age shooting of architect Stanford White. A jaded novelist (François Berléand) competes with the bizarrely unstable heir to a Lyon pharmaceutical fortune (Benoît Magimel) for the affections of a luscious TV weather girl (Ludivine Sagnier). Chabrol skewers the pretensions of literati and haute bourgeois alike and, although the inevitable crime of passion is committed late in the movie, it’s evident that what we have really been watching is the gradual murder of a soul. –New York Film Festival

Claude Chabrol

Widely credited as the founding father of the French Nouvelle Vague movement, Claude Chabrol is responsible for a body of work that is as prolific as it is boldly defined. Inherent in all of Chabrol’s thrillers is the observation of the clash between bourgeois value and barely-contained, oftentimes violent passion. This clash gives the director’s work a melodramatic quality that has allowed him to drift between the realm of the art film and that of popular entertainment.

Born in Paris on June 24, 1930, Chabrol was educated at the University of Paris, where he was a pharmacology student, and at the Ecole Libre des Sciences Politiques. Following some military service, he developed an interest in the cinema and worked for a brief time in the publicity… read more

Despite an interesting start, I find this film to be weak, perhaps Chabrol's weakest. The character development is poor and it is impossible to buy into certain situations. The denouement just about ruins the film for me. 2/5

Can't be correct, the film goes for longer than 75 min! This film is great. I really enjoyed it and Ludavine is sensational and in the movie she's really good too. It's the only Claude Chabrol film I've seen. I really want to see some of his older school films.
