Synopsis

After years of no contact with his Uncle Henry, London banker and bond trader Max Skinner learns that Henry has died. Max inherits his château and vineyard in Provence. Max spent part of his childhood there, learning maxims and how to win and lose, and honing his killer instinct (at chess, which serves him well in finance). Max goes to France intent on selling the property. He spends a few days there, getting the property ready to show. Memories, a beautiful woman, and a young American who says she’s Henry’s illegitimate daughter interrupt his plans. –IMDb

Ridley Scott

One of the most promising directors of the late ‘70s, Ridley Scott displayed stylistic flair and remarkable storytelling abilities in such films as The Duellists (1977) and his landmark Alien (1979). I was torn between giving this film 2 or 3 stars,I settled on 3(but just bearly)....its not a bad film but its does feel quite a bit imbalanced.I see a heavy Tati influence distInctly in this film with its humor in parts but it does feel out of tone with the rest of the film. There's cliche's in the film but the characters are likable and I really enjoy the location and the cinimatogophy (even if its under utilized).

On the one hand, it had me asking "Ridley, what were you thinking when you were making this movie?", and on the other hand, I really enjoyed it. Just such a strange choice for Sir Scott.

Not a prime movie. But it always leaves that good feeling. Wine, Provence, and Marion Cotillard!...How can it go wrong?!
