Well put.
I was unsure with what to expect from this film and it being the first David Cronenberg film I have seen it, it was certainly memorable, gripping and intense. Vigo's talent and performance reeled me in more into observing this film closely and even Mario Bello deserves recognition for her performance. Along side Ed Harris. Really enjoyed this film but I was certainly expecting a different ending. Still 5/5
a lovely genre bender from Cronenberg, challenging established conventions of the gangster genre, affirming that the simplistic 'american dream' is inherently dishonest due to our natural tendency to lean toward violence. Warrants a couple of watches, for sure.
sure, if you're always trying to out-smart the film you are watching rather than simply get involved in it then maybe you won't dig this (and if you can't even watch a movie without trying to condescendingly out-smart it then i think it really indicates some strongly negative in your character). This is a powerful and dynamic film, and essentially a character study. Watch it.
Also, why is simplicity seen as something negative - this film has more complex elements, but it is direct - when simplicity can be so effective?
Asi es como se adaptan las novelas gráficas. David debería hacer un taller para que se inscriba Zack Snyder y deje de hacer mamadas.
Given that it's a Cronenberg film I was surprised that it was actually much less visceral and intense than the comic that it takes inspiration from. Still a good drama on its own terms.
The film has a uniquely average plot, characters. Cronenberg's directions always have some strange aura around them but it's not enough.I never considered Mortensen a versatile actor. Everybody's picking him as a camelon but I can't understand why. He's always the same. William Hurt is unique in the end. The story is so simple and weak that I felt bored throughout. I knew the climax at the middle of the film.
the actress playing the mother was awful and it put me off a little, but Viggo is beast in it.
Strong. You spread the anguish. Excellent script Beautiful view. I never tire of seeing. From 0 to 10: 9
This was an excellent movie with some fantastic performances. A film with some fascinating ideas.
I'll have to rate this 3/5 instead of 4/5... the lack of character depth just stands out too much.
It's a terrible one for me even though it is considered one of the best in that year. It contains anuncanny performance by Hurt no doubt but that's not enough to hold the whole.I felt like I've watched this a hundred times because of the weak plot and terrible screenplay....what an "everyday" movie is this...don't understand why it holds such a high ranking.
The character depth is evident, but subtle - not forced in any way. The first and final scenes were equally well executed, where Cronenberg truly shines. Each relationship was developed well - especially in one of the final scenes (I can't spoil it). However, I couldn't help but feel that one or two scenes were unneccesary, or maybe too long. Overall, a very enjoyable film. 4/5.
I like Cronenberg, but this is a sad excuse for cinema. A collection of ideas thrown together without much additional thought.
Kind of upset I didn't see this earlier. Cronenburg suits this film so well, it is of course, violent, in a traditional body-disfiguring obsessed way, but along with that comes a powerful undercurrent of emotion and a story that peels away at its layers meticulously. Viggo is a god damn actor, god dammit.
I remember leaving the theatre asking myself if I had just watched a perfect movie... Brillant! PS:I would love to see Maria Bello more often...
It isn't Videodrome or Naked Lunch (what is, or could be, either one of those?) It's very tense and does contain really great performances (Mortensen obviously), but I kind of violently disagree with the "not deep," etc. It's pretty deep, and the more I think about AHOV (since having seen it 4 yrs ago), it's probably the deepest work Cronenberg's done since at least Dead Ringers (and I love Naked Lunch)...
This was my first Cronenberg film and I love the stark lighting. The raw situations that these characters were in. Much like "No Country for Old Men", there were long periods of silence and then there is an explosion of violence. The moments of violence were disturbing, but very effective to the central story.
