William Dieterle

William Dieterle was the youngest of nine children of parents Jacob and Berthe Dieterle. They lived in poverty, and when he was old enough, William earned money as a carpenter and a scrap dealer. A grand studio production, but also a patchy one. There are several bewitching moments, to be sure (the first scenes in the enchanted forest are pure moviemaking magic), when the film isn’t simply coasting off the sheer pomp of the baroque aesthetics or Mendelssohn’s book, or the pure charisma of its three big stars (Cagney, de Havilland, Rooney) for that matter. Other sections are just starkly, if perhaps not uncommonly dry for this type of production. Ultimately reserved for Shakespeare completists and connoisseurs of Golden Age grandeur.
