A Night To Remember

Roy Ward Baker’s A Night to Remember is still claimed as one of, if not the most accurate accounts of the sinking of the Titanic. Minus that whole ship breaking in fucking half as it went down thing. Really? Not one survivor remembered that little detail? It took us seventy-five years to figure this out?

The film was shot very beautifully. We start out with the boat launch. Following is the opening credits. It’s a single shot of the ocean, constantly bobbing up and down. To the point where you get a little disoriented when we get back into the film. Fantastic effect. As we get closer to the iceberg, the camera gets a little more intense. We get these nice, fast, personal push-ins on the crew members who hear the news of the oncoming ice field. After the warnings are arrogantly ignored, those fast push-ins start “attacking” the passengers. Those poor, poor bastards. And then there is the ship itself. I love me some good model work!
