The visuals are incredible and the story and the way it is told is amazingly unique and unconventional by any standard. The atmosphere is full of so much dread and mystery that I was at a loss of words by the time the credits rolled.
Kim Ji-Woon's stylish direction with a very clever screenplay that makes the viewer work. The story's resolution is open to different interpretations, but it's not your typical twist ending if you've been paying close attention. The chills come from its atmosphere and pacing. And the girls performances are top-notch. Marketed as a horror film, it's really a psychological thriller, and a fine example of the genre.
The plot does require a bit of 'brain-work'. Psychological, full of suspense and over all 'stylish' and surprising plot line makes for an over-all entertaining movie. Definitely worth watching once, at least.
Not too scary and somewhat plodding at times, but the steady pace kept me fixated throughout, and the tail end of the final act resolved the constant stream of disturbing information in a satisfying way. I appreciate a horror that bucks the trend and exchanges violence, shock scares and gore for good ol' psychological torment and dramatic character conflict.
The plot was a little convoluted at the end, requiring more brain-work than some might like, but the vibrant images of the film have left a lasting impression.
A gorgeous horror film and one of best Asian horror films of the decade. Fantastic direction, great acting, and beautiful cinematography really launch this far ahead of the rest of asian horror that is out there. A must-see.
After the first 60 minutes of the film, I would have rated it five * without any problem. The actors were great, the dramatic tension perfectly formulated by the director and the cinematography exciting. The second part, in my opinion, was rather weak with its improbable attempts to explain what we saw before. It seems that Kim Ji-woon wanted so badly to manipulate his audience that he lost himself in the process. Too bad. Recommended, though.
this film was attacked severely by a korean critic as being an "unprepared screenplay" but i still love this film for defying conventional narrative logic and above all its beautiful imagery
I loved the whole Korean Gothic aesthetic that Ji-woon Kim went for in this one. The film itself was similar to the rest of his output, highly enjoyable but not all too memorable. Regardless, its still a favorite of mine despite its various plot holes and flaws.
Full on plot holes and screenplay traps/bad twists. the only meaningful things about it are a few eerie moments, some performances and a sad ending.
