Man, wonderful comment(s).
I think if you didn't grow up in a household that contained the ever-lingering threat of violence, this movie isn't going to have the same impact. Parts of this movie were, to me, like what I imagine war flashbacks to be like for veterans. I just started crying and shaking and wanting to throw up. I've never loved something so fiercely for having such a hideous effect on me.
Loved this film. Acting still matters, doesn't it? But it's also all the subtle nuances--the mixture of feelings captured by Rowlands' face: of betrayal, frustration, fragility... Sometimes the acting feels a bit over the top. But with the circumstances she faces--a husband who takes her for granted by bringing his buddies home for breakfast unannounced & expects her to feed them--no wonder.
Mabel and Nick can never be reduced to any one “characterization” or understanding, because they are human; a tornado of feelings, impulses, regrets, confusions and passions that shift and revise. I don't think Mabel is crazy. She has too much love and doesn’t know what to do with the excess. This is often misinterpreted by not only those around her—those under whom she is “influenced” —but also by most audiences.
Feel this film, for cryin' out loud. Let it kick you in the gut. To attempt to intellectualize, deconstruct or define a film such as this (or its characters, for that matter) is like using trigonometry to understand improvisational jazz. If you didn't get this film, you haven't watched it enough times. Put simply, "A Woman Under the Influence" is why I make films.

I agree wholeheartedly. As both a cinephile and a filmmaker, this film changed my life upon first viewing, and continues to do so every time I see it.
Embarrassing. I've had bipolar disorder since age 9, and I can tell you this film overacts banalities and underacts the mood swings of "manic depression". Its problems stem from the era of psychology it's set in - one where the conventional treatment was electroshock therapy and the alternatives were New Age snake oils. Character development equals quirk, and there's nothing quirky about mental illness. Grade: D.
I don't intend to put a value judgment on this film. It's valid, though, for me, completely illogical, unfolding with absurdity & testing the audience's patience. Though the cuts are drawn out and famous people attribute their affection for "Woman Under the Influence", I don't find it interesting or engaging. Peter Falk bothers me to no end. Lack of style. Rebellion for its own sake. Ultimately a flaccid epic.
"Devastador", como dito num comentário aqui, é um bom adjetivo pra "Uma mulher sob influência". Rowlands faz o percurso de uma dona de casa sempre à beira de um ataque de nervos. Com isso, arrasta toda sua família e nós também, claro! A 'loucura cotidiana' é captada pela câmera na mão e um tempo próprio da ação teatral, quando o gesto é mais valioso do que a facilidade de um corte. Cinema acima de qualquer suspeita.
My favorite Cassavetes film, this movie is a volley of emotion with Gena Rowlands beautifully delivering an intriguing performance as a woman under the influence. Not only an exploration of relationship dynamics, but at it's core an immaculate character study on a woman that is not easily figured out or explained.
There's nothing more satisfying than to watch a director's style take a film to places beyond where no other director could take it to and this is one of those films.
gena rowlands gives one fearless performance, overshadowing the fine work of her co-star peter falk, a frustrated blue collar worker trying to deal with his fragile spouse's increasingly bizarre behavior. cassavettes goes places no one else dared, investigating every corner of a dysfunctional family's life in the 70s
gena rowlands is just surreally amazing in this.unbelievable really. and this film is so very oddly beautiful that, i remember, first time i saw it, it was like an illumination for me.i still can't find a word to describe it....i don't know...like... it changes you.
It takes about an hour to get into its rhythm, but when it does there isn't much that is on the same level. If I were to pick out a flaw, I guess I would say Rowlands overacted here and there. In its own way, this film is a wildly romantic look at a man and woman who are both crazy enough to be with each other and somehow make it work. Lovely.
It's not her, it's him. It's a great study of the psychological terror a person is capable of. A prime example for all the disfunctional families we are all part of.
