Synopsis

An original musical film, Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the 1960s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool. A combination of live action and animation, the film is paired with many songs by The Beatles that defined the time. —IMDb

This is my biggest guilty pleasure film. I see the flaws, the cheesiness, but it works for me. I always leave the film with a smile on my face, and love in my heart. I cheer at the characters highs, and feel for them at their lows. I love the tongue in cheek jokes for Beates fans, and it has a kinetic and chaotic feel that I feel represents the era, and it's ideas, very well. I don't like "Dear Prudence" though.

I don't understand the hate for the film. It is an entertaining film with a good story and other technical aspects. Taymor's vision is spectacular as she traces the life and development of this group of friends. I am not a music purist, so I don't know how it has "butchered" The Beatles. I feel that the film transcends by exploring how they affected American culture and society.
