I originally wanted to give this film four starts but though better of it after second consideration, although interesting and funny at times, Greg Mottola’s semi-autobiographical film set at a second rate amusement park in Pittsburgh never really connected with me like other films in the genre. Unlike Mottola’s Superbad which had the stamp of Judd Apatow, this film felt more like a film you would see from Cameron Crowe or Richard Linklater, much more character driven with dialogue that is much more literary then how most people speak in real life. That being said, I really enjoyed the performances, particularly Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Martin Starr (sans beard) and Mottola has a nice indie style to his directing. But none of it was very revelatory and I’m afraid that I’ll forget it soon enough, that’s why I can only give it 3 starts. I am real curious however to see how Mottola’s next film, Paul, turns out as he is taking over the reins from Edgar Wright for the new Simon Pegg/Nick Frost comedy. Not sure if the two styles are complementary but I will definitely be first in line.
